THIS WEEK — ALICIA SUKRA from WONDERSPEAK
Welcome to our series on Toronto Mom-Entrepreneurs! Over the next few weeks we’ll feature Toronto moms juggling growing businesses as well as motherhood and learn a little about what they’re up to.
Name: Alicia Sukra
Company: Wonderspeak – Speech Language Pathology
Contact: [email protected]
The Pitch: We are Speech Language Pathologists with over 10 years of experience, located in the Trinity Bellwoods area. Our services are open to virtually anyone. For toddlers, children and teens, we provide therapy to increase language skills, improve articulation and clarity of speech, as well as reduce stuttering. For Professionals, we provide services to improve presentation skills, which may include working on articulation and fluency. We also provide Accent Reduction services. For those who have been affected by head trauma, such as a stroke or head injury, or those who have been diagnosed with a progressive disease, such as Parkinson’s or MS, we provide therapy to improve communication.
Why she got started: After speaking with numerous parents, I found two common issues – parents commenting on traveling far for speech services or parents who did not know much about speech pathology services. I realized that providing in-home service would be of great value, especially to new parents, and we also created an interactive facility where play-based therapy could be offered.
Why her business is unique: At Wonderspeak, we provide exceptional evidence- and experienced-based therapy. With over 10 years in the industry, we are well versed in a wide spectrum of difficulties, and have the knowledge and training to work with a diverse population. We know that every person is unique and learns differently. We create customized therapy plans that involve training parents & caregivers to help move achievements outside of the clinical setting.
On where she wants to be in 5 years: Expanding! Our goal is to bring our top-rated services beyond the GTA.
Kids: A girl (4) and a boy (18 months)
Most taxing time of the week: Weekday mornings! No matter how much we plan and prepare, Murphy’s Law happens every morning in this household!
Thing she thought that she’d never do as a mother — that she does all the time: Just about everything. Pre-mom, I’ll admit, I was (*ahem*) a little judgemental about what moms were letting their kids get away with. Now, I completely get it; if it doesn’t hurt the kids and they’re not screaming “mommy”, it’s fine!
Does she let her kids jump on the couch? Couch, bed, cushions, mommy’s tummy. Whatever works!
Most impressive dinner (in terms of health and ease of concoction) that her kids will actually eat: My sister’s easy, but tasty carrot soup. Cook sliced carrots with onions and spices in veggie stock. Puree, then cook lightly with coconut milk.
Best Time of the Day: Bed time of course. Quiet kids listening intently to a story, lots of snuggling, a warm bed. Doesn’t get much better than that!
Messy House or Neat House: Messy, messy, messy!! I’m in awe of tidy mums! Hats off to you!
Favourite Book at the Moment: The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child
ON HER NEIGHBOURHOOD: Trinity-Bellwoods
Favourite Park: Trinity-Bellwoods, for sure! It’s so big and there are so many unique people doing amazing things there (juggling, tight-rope walking, etc.)! We love having picnics there!
Restaurant that you dare take your kids to: Easy Restaurant for brunch if we feel adventurous. It’s a noisy place anyway and they are always so accomodating for the kids.
Local Special Treat: Yogurty’s – Close to home and so yummy.
Best Kept Secret: Mabel’s on West Queen West. Amazing croissants.
