THIS WEEK — STACI LUMB from Single Moms Fresh Start
Welcome to our series on Toronto Mom-Entrepreneurs! Over the next few weeks we’ll feature Toronto moms juggling growing businesses as well as motherhood and learn a little about what they’re up to.
Name: Staci Lumb
Company: Single Moms Fresh Start
The Pitch: We are a not for profit organization that provides compassionate support services, referrals, and charitable donations to single mothers in need.
Why she got started: I was a single mother in a very bad place. With a new born baby I was battling custody, child support and finding a suitable home for my son and I to live in. I was trying to find services to assist in referrals and legal assistance but was constantly bounced back and forth from organization to government funded agencies. It was stressful and tedious and I thought that if some of these services were available under one roof we would assist in eliminating some of the stress newly single mothers face.
Why it’s better than what’s out there: After extensive research before registering our organization I came up empty on services and organizations that cater specifically to the single mother population. We are unique and we provide many services under one roof.
On where she wants to be in 5 years: In 5 years we plan to have an office up and running in the GTA, continue to partner with government funded organizations and grow our organization to better assist more clientele and more of the single mother population. We’d like to provide more funding, more donations and more services to those in need and to continue to eliminate poverty in single parent households.
Kids: One son
Most taxing time of the week: Most taxing time of the week is probably Monday when I have classes, have unanswered emails from the weekend from our clients and have to work in the evening all while making sure my son has eaten a proper dinner and is taken care of during the hours I am at work.
Thing she thought that she’d never do as a mother — that she does all the time: I always had an idea of the kind of mother I would be. I did not think I would have as much time as I do to spend with my son as most moms work long hours but I have been very lucky to be able to juggle school, a career and spending a ton of time with my son.
Does she let her kids jump on the couch? I don’t let him per say. I have a very big couch and my son and his friends tend to think of it as a trampoline. I don’t like him jumping on it and am trying to put a stop to it, but it’s difficult when he is sitting on it while I am cooking dinner and I can’t catch him every single time.
Most impressive dinner (in terms of health and ease of concoction) that her kids will actually eat: I cook clean as my son has a stomach condition but the biggest time savers for me are recipes in my slow cooker. I throw some meat and veggies in the slow cooker in the morning and set it on low and dinner is ready and served by the time we get home in the evening.
Best Time of the Day: Bed time. We have finished our daily responsibilities, dinner is done, and we get to lie down together in my son’s bed and read a book, tickle each other and talk about the day we just had and what the plan is for tomorrow. The only time of day that I get his full attention and he gets mine.
Messy House or Neat House: Definitely a messy house. I am clean but I am not organized when it comes to my home although my kitchen always needs to be spotless because I love to cook and spend a lot of time in there. My son cleans his toys up and is very particular on where they go so his section of the house seems to always be tidy.
Favourite Book at the Moment: I love biographies of famous rock stars. Scar Tissue will always be on my top list of books. Anything by Sylvia Brown as well as I love self help books.
Favourite Sayings: “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” I have that one tattooed on my spine thats how much I truly believe in it.
Biggest Mom-vs-Career Challenge: Biggest challenge is doing it on my own. Organizing the business plan and helping our current clients when I am completely on my own, as well as trying to put my time and attention into my own child while continuing my education and building my career.
Your Best Career Time-Saver: Being in school part time and working part time gives me time during the day to work on Single Moms Fresh Start and to assist clients with referral and support.
ON HER NEIGHBOURHOOD: Milton
Favourite Park: Rattle Snake Point Conservation Area. We love going on hikes. It’s not quite a park but a forest with crazy trails and the best view you will ever see looking all the way to Niagra Falls. Our local park is a ton of fun too. Lieterman Park is a 5 min walk and has trails, a splash pad and soccer fields.
Restaurant that you dare take your kids to: My son loves sushi. We go to a few different sushi places in and around Milton. We also really love Rad Brothers!
Local Special Treat: Starbucks. We frequent our local Starbucks and while I enjoy a coffee my son gets a lemonade and a protein box
Best Kept Secret: The 6 conservation parks all 10 min from my home. Up in the escarpment each one has its own features.
