Why not buy yourself a gift this holiday season? This practice has become so acceptable that the amount of people who will admit to doing it, has almost doubled in the past two years!
According to the National Retail Federation, 60% of people are now “self-gifting.” Not only do we see the trend in consumers, but companies are even targeting ads towards self-gifting. As far back as 2007, Lexus ran an ad featuring a man who was dissatisfied with his Christmas gifts but happy when he got into a beautiful car with a bow on it, while the narrator stated “there’s no law that states you can’t get yourself a little something.” Since then, many companies have jumped on this trend including Groupon who recently declared a “self-gifting day.”
It’s easy to find thing that you like for yourself when you are out shopping, especially when something you’ve needed or wanted is being sold for a good price. Is it wrong to buy yourself something for the holidays? Of course it isn’t! But like everything there is a balance – don’t skimp on others to spoil yourself. But do recognize that you may need a little spoiling!
As parents (and typically even more-so, as moms), we tend to give and give and give. We know that we need to take care of ourselves or we are not good to anybody else but when one child is screaming because he needs to be fed, and the other one wants to be picked up because she just took a tumble and bumped her head, and dinner is burning on the stove, it seems impossible to take care of yourself. And even more, it can seem impossible to take care of your romantic relationship!
So don’t have any shame in participating what more than half of the population does anyway and practice the art of self-gifting this year! And what could be a better gift to yourself than a baby-sitter? Either for a night out, or just to give yourself some “me time” to sleep, read, shop or whatever it is you used to do when you had more time to yourself!
