TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF FIRST!
Of course, this can feel close to impossible when little ones demand so much of you. But whether its a weekly yoga class, a night out every week, a daily gym visit, a better diet, or a job, make sure you are giving to yourself first.
Us mothers often have a hard time doing this because we feel guilty when we prioritize ourselves – we feel guilty when we spend time away from our children, or spend money on things that we should save for our children. So the first step to taking care of yourself first is….
GET RID OF THE GUILT!
My sister texted me “joking” about what a terrible mother she was for sleeping in the morning after she hadn’t seen her kids for seven days. I disagreed: “A good mother is a well-rested one.”
Another girlfriend confided in me that she’s happier working full time than she was when she was staying at home but feels terribly guilty about being away from her child all day. I replied, “You’re probably a better mother because you recognize what you need to do to keep yourself happy.”
Whatever it is you need to do to take care of yourself – do it!
Find a way – make room in the day, make room in your schedule, make room in the budget. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
A happy mother will naturally translate into a great mother – even if that looks different than society’s expectations.
A stressed out, over-taxed mother who doesn’t do enough for herself might have difficulty finding patience for her children.
Prioritize yourself first. Not only do you need it- your children need it too.
